Brief: Create an interactive website and a zine extending on the websites topic.
For my
website
I choose to focus on injustice in the criminal justice system. I decided to collage the information taking inspiration from missing person bulletin boards as well as how someone might collect information on a case. I redacted information altering the story to make the innocent look guilty allowing the viewer to move around the pieces and uncover the truth; hovering over redacted content with a mouse reveals hidden text. For each case I coded one of the documents to blur when hovered by the viewer's mouse and when clicked a manila folder opens. The folder contains a summary of the case to help the viewer access any information they may have missed.
Throughout each case I used duct tape as a repeated motif because of this I created part of the title out of duct tape to help tie it together with the rest of the content. For the body copy and other typography I decided to use Times New Roman as well as a typewriter looking font that was monospace. I felt both matched the feel of official documentation and matched well with the documents I had collected and used as imagery. For the background I used an image of the inside of a jail that I edited to be black and white and then made a video with a jittery blurring effect. I wanted to create a somewhat uneasy feeling as well as create depth to the flat digital collage with a consistent moving element.
For this
zine
I interviewed one of my neighbors who is a retired lawyer. Because the website was more separated from the viewer I wanted this Zine to be something that felt more human and personal. I found a lot of inspiration in personal notebooks and wanted to base my visuals off of that making it seem like someone's personal case notes or journal. With this zine I used a lot of similar visual language that I had previously used in my website collage, writing elements, photo and document collection. In terms of binding I did perfect bound as well as a faux leather cover with elastic to fasten and a ribbon bookmark to really get across the notebook feel.
For the more human aspect of the design I had portions of text underlined, annotations, arrows leading to other information or connective thoughts, circles or a switch from black to red ink to emphasize certain thoughts that were all hand drawn. Additionally, I created different layers of collaging where one layer was printed and another was collaged on top with additional pieces added with a paperclip to help add more depth and again an aspect of humanity or human interaction with the zine.
