Brief: Create a Monograph about an artist of your choice

For this monograph, I really wanted to focus on identity and breaking out of the boxes we are placed in as it is a huge theme in Chella Man’s art as well as their life. To emphasize this, I created a grid system that the typography follows. It is three columns by three rows creating a 3 x 3 grid. To emphasize the six main parts of Chella Man’s identity I ran the body copy as well as images through the second and third column taking up six boxes. As for the headers, titles, and subhead content I ran it down the first column breaking out of the initial six boxes. For the typography, I found a non-binary type artist and used typography from them as I wanted to again emphasize identity and highlight artists who aren’t often featured. For the color I chose brown as a lot of Chella Man’s work relates to the human body and humanity. The color brown feels human and natural so I thought it connected and paired well with their work. I used it throughout the book as a spot color and for full bleed pages to separate sections.
