Brief:  Interview a minority group  and present the content in any way

Zine:
This scene is printed on the Risograph and loop staple bound. I wanted the zine to seem somewhat informational, but also feel slightly intimate or personal. The topic I chose was adoption and the interviewees talk a lot about their own personal experiences, so I wanted the informational side to come across, but also the personal side of their stories to come across in the design. I used family photos of the interview years as well as the green gradient and Risograph texture to create the feeling of human touch. In addition to this I considered size and how the book being 4 x 7“ would make it a more intimate reading process which reflects the content.

Book Intro:
To test whether Atkinson’s Identity Development Model (Atkinson, 1998) is valid for marginalized groups, I interviewed adoptees including transnational and transracial adoptees. Transnational adoption is the adoption of a child from another country where the child is transported to the adopter’s country to become a permanent resident (travel state gov). Transracial adoption is the adoption of a child into a family of a different race. In most cases the families who are adopting in the US are white, and the children who are adopted or not (npr). Around 2 to 4% of American families have adopted a child. So there’s around 5 million Americans who have been adopted (adoption network). Although adoption is considered more often than in the past for American families, adoptees are still a minority in the US and deal with a complex relationship with their identity that most Americans do not face.
